President Mahama Dissolves All Statutory Boards and Councils Established by Former Government
In a significant move aimed at fostering effective governance and aligning with constitutional mandates, President John Dramani Mahama has officially dissolved all statutory boards, corporations, commissions, and councils that were appointed by the previous administration. This sweeping decision took effect on January 7, 2025, coinciding with President Mahama’s inauguration for his new term in office.
This action is in full compliance with the provisions of the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845), which mandates that the tenure of appointees to such bodies concludes upon the inauguration of a new president. This legal framework ensures a seamless transition of power and governance, promoting accountability and fresh oversight in public sector operations.

The announcement was made by Acting Presidential Spokesperson, Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who clarified that this directive does not extend to independent constitutional bodies. Institutions such as the Electoral Commission, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), and the National Media Commission remain unaffected due to their autonomous status enshrined in the constitution.
Mr. Ofosu further explained that the reconstitution of these statutory bodies will be undertaken promptly in accordance with their respective enabling legislations. This restructuring aims to inject new energy, enhance operational efficiency, and align the entities with the government’s strategic goals for national development.
During this transitional phase, the management teams of these entities have been directed to consult the Chief of Staff before making any critical decisions that could impact their operations or policy direction. This measure is intended to maintain stability and ensure that no significant commitments are made without appropriate oversight.
President Mahama expressed his deep appreciation to the outgoing board members for their dedication and service to the nation. He acknowledged their contributions to the growth and progress of their respective institutions and conveyed his best wishes for their future endeavors.
The dissolution and subsequent reconstitution of these boards are viewed as strategic steps toward reinforcing good governance, enhancing transparency, and fostering accountability within the public sector. This move is expected to pave the way for the introduction of innovative policies and initiatives that will drive national development and improve public service delivery.

The nation now awaits the announcement of newly appointed members who will bring fresh perspectives and renewed vigor to these critical state institutions.
