Ghana, US Strengthen Cooperation in Visas, Trade and Security – Ablakwa

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, says his meeting with the Acting United States Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Rolf Olson, was “very constructive,” with both sides reviewing recent gains in bilateral relations.

In a social media update, the Minister noted that discussions covered key developments, including the restoration of five-year visas for Ghanaians, the removal of former President Donald Trump’s 15% tariffs on cocoa, semi-processed cocoa and other eligible agricultural exports, arrangements for World Cup supporters, and Ghana’s exemption from last week’s US Green Card review and immigration suspension.

Ablakwa also highlighted ongoing collaboration under the bilateral Defence Cooperation Agreement, noting improvements in intelligence sharing and joint training.

“Ghana and the United States have increased intelligence cooperation and training activities, supported by coordinated use of U.S. military aviation assets. Ghana welcomes this collaboration on our shared security priorities. All aviation activities are coordinated with the appropriate government authorities,” he said.

On trade, the Minister expressed optimism about ongoing African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) discussions, stressing that Ghana-US relations will continue to be shaped by the country’s strategic national interests.

“Ghana-US relations will continue to prioritize the best deals for the people we serve,” he added.
